Netflix Atlas: The Robot That Landed in the Wrong Place
J.Lo's robot misses its landing zone and crashes through the roof of a Mexico City landmark to announce a live fan event.
The challenge
Announce a live fan event with a fake out-of-home that feels like a scene from the film and is believable at a real, recognizable venue.
The idea
Following the film's premise of robots falling from the sky, the piece shows street-level POVs of an object streaking across the sky with a smoke trail, a close-up of Toreo's roof, and the robot smashing through the beam-and-glass structure to land in the middle of the plaza in smoke and debris.
As the smoke clears, the robot poses with J.Lo next to a Netflix booth, joking that it landed in the wrong place.
My part
I directed and operated the motion capture for the robot's performance, and built the 3D VFX: the smoke trail and impact pyro, and the full RBD destruction of the beam-and-glass roof. I rendered passes in Unreal Engine and Houdini; final compositing was done by others.
